Lideta Mercato, designed by Vilalta Studio in Addis Ababa, continues to receive international recognition. Recently, it was highlighted in an article by the University of Oklahoma as an outstanding example of innovative and sustainable architecture worldwide.
The project redefines the traditional concept of a shopping center, adapting it to Ethiopia’s social, economic and climatic realities. Its design addresses common challenges found in the city’s commercial buildings such as excessive natural lighting and poor ventilation by implementing an architectural strategy that prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental comfort.
The perforated façade, inspired by local textile patterns, not only gives the building a strong cultural identity but also regulates light and airflow, significantly reducing the need for artificial climate control.
This recognition reinforces Vilalta Studio’s vision of creating architecture that not only meets functional needs but also respects and enhances the culture and environment in which it is embedded. Lideta Mercato continues to establish itself as a model of sustainable architecture, both in Africa and beyond.
